This is the site of the Eagle Cliff Cannery, the first salmon cannery in the Pacific Northwest established in 1865. William Hume, one of the cannery owners, named the spot when he saw eagles nesting on the high cliff above the town site. William, George and Robert Hume started the cannery on the Columbia after a failed attempt on the Sacramento River that, among other things, involved some exploding cans. In their first year of operation they packed four thousand cases of forty-eight cans each.

Eureka Cannery site, Eagle Cliff. William Hume and Isaac Smith built the Eureka and Epicure Packing Company cannery at this location in 1868. By 1884 the company had expanded to three canneries on the river. The use of Chinese labor began here and at Eagle Cliff in 1872, when George Hume imported the first laborers. The use of Chinese workers spread to nearly all canneries on the river within a decade. Today only snag piling mark the site.
